As for what it is, I am not sure. When you say mold...what do you mean exactly? What else does it look like?

is there any chance that they're attached by a tiny little thread-like base? cause if so, I think I have them, and I'm also in search of identification... a grain of sand with fuzzyness around it, attached by a tiny thread. I wasn't able to get a picture of mine at all... mine, too seems to have made a matt. Any clues? I'm really really hopin' this ain't someything baaaaad.

it started off on a rock. it made little white legs. now there is a big mat and ball of sand that look like they have been glued together. the fuzz kind of looks like white hair.

Sponges usually don't care for the direct light. Kinda looks like one, though. Are they reproducing quickly?
I'm sorry, I am at a loss, fishkeeper101. I suspect others here will have an answer for you shortly.

I've had these in my tank as well, looks like a slime ball or egg sack. I think it is a mucus ball secreted by something in the sandbed, possibly a worm or something. Has never seemed to hurt anything.
