What to do?
I have what I think is 1 colonial hydroid. It is brown in color and pops in and out like a feather duster. There is only one of them tho. Will it spread? It is on a rock that used to have star polyps attached to it and now the polyps are gone but the thing didn't show up until after the polyps were gone I think. I am fairly new to this so I am not sure if I should have taken the rock out LFS said that it would be ok and might even be a good source for other growth. I thought that this was a cool thing but now from what I am reading I think that mabye I should take the entire rock out. What should I do?

Sounds like it IS a featherduster if it pops in and out really fast. Hydroids arent that reactive. does it have a tube?

It doesn't appear to have a tube but goes in and out of a small hole in the rock.

Looks like a feather duster to me. Many of them either create their own burrows in rock or settle into abandoned burrows so it looks as if they have no tubes.

It does appear that you got a free feather. To make sure, when it retracts, if you shine a light into the hole it goes into, you should see the tube it is comming out of. The end of it will be closed off, like a scallop. In time it will grow its tube out of the rock. Place it in moderate flow and it will grow fast..

Thanks for all your help. You all were right, it does have a very tiny tube stuck into the hole in the rock. I haven't seen one that small and not feathering out like that before. I guess it is just a young one. Thanks again. I have never had a cool hitchiker before!!!! WOOHOO!!!!
