Some people say that a clicking sound can mean a pistol shrimp too. I have'nt heard what a pistol shrimp sounds like but I know very well what a mantis sounds like; I have two smashers. I describe the usual sound as taking a small rock and tossing it onto the concrete. The cracking sound is very similar to that, this sound usually comes when a mantis is pounding at some LR. If the mantis is hitting glass, the sound is slightly muffled. The sound can also sound similar to little water splashes in your sump/tank. If you want to really know if you have a mantis, lift the LR up if you can, it will bolt right out most of the time. If it turns out to be a mantis, let me know and I'll help you find a home for it. Please don't kill it.

Do you have any large snails such as turbo's? I was freaking thinking I had a mantis and so I sat with a red flash light just waiting for him to show himself. What I found was my turbo tapping his shell against the glass, talk about a sigh of relief. There is also the possibility of fish moving things around if you have them. If you have none of those critters get a flashlight and cover with red plastic so you can watch the tank at night without scarring whatever is making the noise.
