red flatworms?

Does anyone have a good pic of what they look like on a bit of rock? I noticed a bunch of cyano coloured oval patches on my rock tonight and when I poked one of them it moved rather well. Would that be one? If so what do I do about them? I know they're supposed to be pretty bad. . .

The typical red/brown aceola flatworms are not all that bad. If you have lots oif excess nutrients in your tank they can get out of hand and removing them is the dangerous thing when they get bad.

if you just have a few that you can see i do recommend using Saliferts Flatworm Exit according to directions as it is relatively easy and safe to use if you dont have mass amounts of them. The danger in treating for them isnt the actual chemical used, but toxins released into your water when mass amounts of them die at once. If you only have a few you can nip them in the bud without much concern for damage to any of your tank inhabitants.

at the bottom of that page are some pictures of the more common acoel flatwrms which is more than likely what you have if they are indeed flatworms

WAY too tiny to even hope for a pic. They're maybe a millimeter. There were a lot of them that I could see(though that may just be me) on the rocks, so I don't know if the flatworm exit would be a good idea. So should I just leave them alone for now then?

That's my understanding , too.

How many is a bunch? Half a dozen? Or closer to 50+?

I don't know/didn't count, but it is definately over 30, I'd say. I probably didn't even notice them when they were in a managable ammount>_>

How big is your tank???

If you can really try to look and only see 30......thats not very many.

If you only see 30 looking hard........you can assume you have well over a couple hundred plus.....which still isnt very many ; )

Salifert FWE is very safe to use according to directions with numbers like that.

I have used it on loaded system with thousands of them in it. Just be prepared with water changes and carbon depending on how many you have to kill

I know my clown and wrasses go to town eating them too once they start floating around when they die

It's only a 10 gallon tank, about 8 gals of water including rockwork.

A while back...I saw a whole bunch of red flatworms on my pagoda. I sucked them up with a turkey baster; put them in a glass jar and played a game of "warm freshwater bath".
