Possible hitchhiker?
I posted this pic in a diferent forum, but this seems more appropriate. The white thing(new to reefs) in the middle of the picture. The LR it's on has a hole through it and it can be seen on the other side also. It's also soft to the touch. Anybody know what it is?
Thanks
J

most likely a sponge.
there are many types. keep an eye on it and see if it starts to cover more of the LR. you may want to re arrange the LR so that area is not touching other pieces. if it is a sponge they can cover LR pretty fast

sure seems like a sponge to me. Not sure what type, but it's sure looking like one at 2nd glance too. Id take Tim's advice and move some of the LR away.

oh and another thing, you might not want to touch it with bare hands. Not sure if you know but some sponges release toxins into humans. lol

Well, I woke up this morning with all my fingers still intact so apparently it's not a flesh eating sponge, hehe.
By the way, what's the deal with sponges? Are they desirable? Are they only hitchhikers, or would someone actually purchase one? Pardon my ignorance. Saltwater is brand new to me.

Welcome to TRT!
Sponges are desirable, they help polish the water due to their filter feeding; they also use up silicates. Yep, you can purchase sponges seperately.

i agree and dis agree at the same time.. nothing like walking the fence...
as vince said they do good things.. but they can do bad things too. like over run your LR. spread like wild fire.. they dont really need a lot of light...if i could cover my sump with them i would.
