polyp eating mithrax?

I think I caught my mithrax eating star polyps. Is this something mithrax would do? I have seen him picking over zoa before but I thought he was just eating stuff off of them but some star polyps are missing now

"I think I caught my mithrax eating star polyps."

Shhhhhhhhhh! Now everybody will want one.

Seriously though, I've seen my mithrax (and several species of hermit) pick amongst the polyps but I have yet to see any damage. Do you have any other corals close to the Star Polyps?

Do you have plenty of algae for the mithrax to feed on? Have you seen any unusual snails/nudibranchs/flatworms on the polyps?

It wouldnt surprise me, those can be kind of spotty in a reef, but I've never heard of it specifically with star polyps.

take a close look at it's claws, if the tips that clamp together are flat on the end then your fine, if they are pointed it is an imposter. you may need to grab the red filter and a flashlight and watch the tank at night to see if something else is eating the polyps.

I took the cautios approach and moved him to a spare 10 gallon tank with some other problem species. I think that unless I get bubble algae he will stay there. He has been out for awhile and there is still no algae in the tank. I think BZA really overstocks its cleanup crews
