please help id....

i don't know when they first appeared but i didn't think anything of them untill i noticed them all along the back of the tank. so what i did what i thought was the logical thing to do and scraped them away. big mistake. now they are on all of the shaded areas of rock. Sounds like aiptasia right? but they look nothing like any pictures i have found of aiptasia. the only reasonable pictures i could take are kind of blurry so heres a description. When they are little they have a bright pink base and semi-transparent tentacles with white bulb like tips, as they get larger the bright pink fades slightly and although they haven't grown in hight, they have increased in diameter. They also have a clearly distinguished mouth. Any Help anyone can give me would be great. I'm just really afraid that these will continue to populate and over run my tank. Please help!!

Welcome to TRT!

I really don't think those are Aiptasia. They look kind of like some mini carpet anemones that I have seen pictures of before, but it is hard to tell based on that one picture alone. Hopefully someone else will chime in soon.

May be a spotted shroom. If not, does it look like this?

That picture kinda looks like them only the base is pinker, but the tentacles do resemble that picture specially at night. They kinda remind me of anemones, are there mushrooms that have tentacles? Thanks for responding so quickly, I've posted on other sites where people weren't so nice so i appreciate your responses!!

Dave that looks like a hidden cup coral. Those are lps and will have a skeleton. Amy welcome to TRT. They do kinda look like mushrooms in that pic, but as you said it isn't clear. Without a better picture I really don't know. Mushrooms grow pretty fast tho, how long has it been since you first noticed them?

I thought it was a hidden cup, but the piccy I put up is most likely a carribean corilamporph of some sort, just due to where I got the rock from.

Dave

I just created a thread about this. I think I may have one of these, but it is hanging upside down under a rock, and no light touches it. What is it?

Corallimorpharian... A Pseudocorynactis caribbeorum, or similar genus. The big 'ol Pacific Indo-Pacific varieties cab be a problem, but the Atlantic/Caribbean ones stay tiny. No need to fear them, unless you have them in a fry tank. They do trap and consume foods from the size of whole mysid to newly hatched brine shrimp.

They are often found in the openings of LR in captive systems, such as caves and overhangs, where flow brings them dinner. They can and will "jump ship" and float around to a new neighborhood if things don't work out for them where they are attached. Much like your mushrooms would.

Here's a good read: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issu...002/invert.htm

Since they are a coralimorph of sorts, they don't have a skeletal cup or base. I carve them off of my rocks and give them to peeps who ask for them. They come up with an exacto knife JUST like mushrooms do. They are non photosynthetic, and thrive in systems that feed smaller fare. I had them in my seahorse tank by the dozens, but the numbers have dropped drastically since converting that tank in to a FO with percs and such. They probably bloomed with the BBS that I was feeding.
