Little Tiny Bugs????

First off I would like to thank all of those at TRT. The information posted has been more than helpful to someone new to the “reef obsession.” I have checked the past archives, to no avail on my most current problem.

About two weeks ago, I woke up in the middle of the night, and decided to check out my tank. When I turned the lights on, I noticed an entirely new tank. I had some flat worms that I didn’t know about, found a crab that I didn’t put in the tank, but the one that concerned me the most was these little tiny bugs crawling all over my liverock.
fficeffice" />>>
I have had my tank (72 gal bow front) up and running now for about 3 months and purchased the LR at the LFS. To describe these things, they are very small ranging from 2mm – to about 4cm. They have a clear exoskeleton, and the best way to describe them would be to say that they look like a very small 1000 legger. I will keep trying to get a picture of them, but they must be nocturnal b/c they are not seen in the day, and once again, they are very tiny. Any clues people? Any help would be appreciated, and pictures links or posts would be great. Thanks.

Amphipods and copepods likely, I don't have a quick link to pics....someone will though. They are a good thing, they clean your tank and become food for some fish.

actually i would be very worried about the crab. most crabs that are hitchhikers are predatory and will hunt and kill any shrimp or small fish you have in the system as they get bigger. you might want to try getting it out of there before it gets to big.

Once again you guys are great, thank you so much. The first pic looks a LOT like what is on / in the live rock. This is such a relief. Thanks again people.

pix of the crab first before you euthanize it though, it may be beneficial, but good pix will be necessary to determine this. Use soem tall glass jar with a piece of shrimp in the bottom. lean it against the rock near where you last saw it so that the crab can craawl into the glass. Position it so it is nerly vertical. The crab will be able then to get in, bt unable to crawl out.

Take good pix at that point and post them here. Pay special attention the pix of the chelips and their tips.

thanks, but never a problem.

make sure to take a pic of the crab when you get it, so we can double check the identity like Tom suggested.
