is this some sort of star? terrible pic, but i only have my camera phone...

are there any pests that resemble stars?

Looks like a brittle or surpant star to me. Is it green? I here green brittle stars are bad and eat small fish.

Brittle and they don't just eat small they can eat big also!

obviously he'll not eat any fish for quite some time as small as he is (about 1.5 inches across)...he is brown and light brown...

you say he'll eat fish, but only fish that are unhealthy or healthy ones too?

do they grow very quickly?

should i put him back in the tank?

if so, should i worry about him becoming fish food himself?

do I need to concern myself with feeding it?

I have many of those small stars in my tank, I've never seen one with more than a 2" span. I can't see how they could harm anything.
