They do look like hydroids...
I had some on a GSP the size of a softball.
Within a few weeks they were so thick I had lost about 80% of the GSP.
I fraged what I could and FW dipped the rest.

Did they come in on the rock, or did they pop up somewhere else in the tank first? Is that an aiptasia in the background, too?

Yep thats Aiptasia too - I've had those zoos for over a year, the hydroids just appeared - looking around the tank closer I see a few smaller ones on the live rock
How do I get rid of them?

Yup, these are (I think ) the same ones I've had in my tank for years. They even survived the "Great Crash of Summer 2007" and cooking outside for 3 months. I thought they were small feather dusters until I started researching this past winter.
If it's any consolation, they've never bothered anything (that I've seen). They're presently near a colony of Protopalys and it appears that the protos are winning. They haven't affected my skin either but then I don't have reactions to wasp/scorpion stings .
