One thing it might be: if your LFS just got them in and acclimated them poorly, it could be a week or longer before the effects of poor acclimation (dead snails) are seen.

Not sure what kind of hermit I have but he's a mean little bugger. He murdered my turbo's and several cleaner crabs. The last straw was finding him pulling tenticles off an already stressed out condy. For now he is on his own in qt tank. You may just have a hermit who wants to be the one and only.
