Cyano Algae
I been having a Diatom/cyano prob. figured out the source my tap water. so i bought a aquaticlife 3 stage ro/di unt. been using that and i think its finally letting up. been still getting some on LR. So I have been using a Turkey baster to blow it off and wet skim it like crazy. been getting lots of brown stuff in my collection cup. Am i making the prob worse with blowing it around? i know it makes it look better for couple days. lol. My water perams all measure good but i know nitrate is prolly bound in the algae. hoping i can get rid of this. also. off the subject i have tried Zoas 2 times now. both with little success. I have 130 PC lighting on a 29gal tank. my calcium was 280 so now i buffering that but would that effect them at all.???

Now that you have likely cut out the nutrient issue feeding the cyano, I would black out the tank for 3 days. this will cause the cyano to die and release their nutrients back into the water. THis will allow a large WC to remove many of the nutrients.

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

Will the black out work in a FW tank too? Can the fish remain in there for the 3 days? Can the tank be uncovered at night or does it need to be 100% dark for 3 days?

I have used it in FW and SW to free up nutrients. I cover the sides but not the top. The amount of ambient light that gets in is pretty minimal. I have known people that didn't cover the sides and still got results. I just tape up some newspaper to be safe. THe fish stay in, they don't need light really. I think if you were to maybe keep fish in the dark for weeks you might mess with their fishy brains but 3 days is no big deal at all.

for 3 days.... not really much. They tolerate many more cloudy days than we give them in a tank when they are in the wild. The thing is a coral has some energy reserves as a more complex and larger organism. The cyano has very little stored energy reserves. Many folks use this in fully stocked reeftanks w/o problems. If a coral looked really weak I don't know that I would try it.

Three days went by pretty quick. I am gonna go uncover the tank in a few minutes, lets see if it worked.

I'd say it worked well. It did not remove it 100%, but it definitely took a chunk out. I have before and after pics, I will post tomorrow.

Good photos to document the results. It appears to have done a decent job. I did not even think of blocking all available light from the tank, I was just thinking of you leaving the lights off for a few days.

I think another day could have been effective. I will wait to see what happens in the next few days.
There was still some on the glass, but it looked "less green" if that makes any sense.
