COLONIAL HYDROIDS - how do you get rid of them
Hi all...I believe I have some of these buggers (I checked on this site: http://www.xtalworld.com/Aquarium/hitchfaq.htm). There is nothing on here about getting rid of them...
So, what recommendations do you all have?
Thanks!
Frank

I had them a few years ago in a fish only system. After spending huge amounts of time searching I came across a couple sites that recommeded the use of panacur(horse dewormer). Try searching for panacur and hydroids or hydra. I have no clue about this product be reef safe. I didn't try it either so I can't attest to its effectiveness.

fish died, broke down the tank. The fish didn't die from the hydra.

Ok...anyone else have any opinions? It says they are bad because they sting other corals. Right now they are on a rock with some Zoa's and the Zoa's seem to be disappearing, I would imagine they are related...
So...anyone?!?

Did you try using Google for the terms mentioned?

Are you sure that the missing zoas are related? Could be a nudi, spider or a sundial snail if the hydroids aren't butted up near them.
Other than that I don't think I'd trust a horse dewormer personally, though don't take my word for it. I could be wrong. I've heard kalk paste/lemon juice/boiling water works. Just be careful where you get stuff.

Pretty sure it is not anything eating them, I have others is the tank and they are not affected. I'll get a pic of these buggers tonight and maybe someone can tell me if I am on the right track.

These can be a major pain to get rid of, they can and will choke out things like zoas. Manually remove as much as you can, but do this out of the tank. One little piece floating away will just spread it. I did find a couple of big scarlet (I think) crabs that would eat them, but sometimes they would just mow the tops off.

kalk paste
they arent all that tough if you can cover them for a few minutes
If you can remove the rock from the tank, you can cover them up with a thick kalk paste and should be able to get rid of them in one try.
If you cant take the rock out of the tank, you want to be careful about how much kalk paste you use in your tank, so it might take a few smaller shots at them
