Common Bristleworm! I have them over 10" in my tank. A wonderful part of your cleanup crew. Harmless to other occupants.

is it normal to only find the one and only in the middle of the night? i see him every couple nights and when the flashlight hit him he hides in the rock.

You probably have more, and they are quite nocturnal, and they are good disposers of detrital accumulations on the sand bed.

Next time you are up after the ights have been off for hours either get a red flashlight, or cover any flashlight with red cellophane of some sort.

some floral paper works, the clear red tape you can find at an auto parts store works great.

Critters cant see the red light so much and you can watch all sorts of stuff you wouldnt be able to otherwise

Or if you've got a laser mouse you can use the "beam" from that as a light.
