Badminten birdie shaped pod?

I was lurking around in my refug tonight and man do I have millions of pods, but then i saw this thing stuck to the side I have never seen before. I got some pics but it's pretty small (1/16). I can actually see a bell shape in the pics that I cant see in person. It is shaped like a badminten birdie and it pumps open and closed to swim, and it swims vigerously. It attaches to the side with the open birdie end side but swims closed end first. I only saw a few when i really looked close, it looks really cool. Is this some sort of pod? What kind? Jellyfish?

I did some poking and it looks like they are indeed jellyfish. I found out at:
since im new it wont let me post url's so you interpret this:
www dot wetwebmedia dot com/jellyidfaqs.htm

I guess they really go for the pods. I wonder how they got in. My setup is as follows.
Upstairs I have my main display tank. Downstairs I have two shallow rubbermaid containers and one deep one. In the first one where the water comes from upstairs I have my skimmer and I use this to grow frags, It is lit with 400 watts of 20K MH.
Next the water flows into the next shallow which contains macroalgae. It is lit by the MH overspray from the first shallow.
Next the water flows into my deep sump which has some LR and sand as well as some mangroves from Hawaii. My heater and return pump are in here. Then we go back upstairs to complete the loop.
In all tanks I have pods (loads of them). But the jellyfish? are only in the last deep container. I searched high and low and cannot find them in any other place. I figured sitting right next to my return pump some would have rode upstairs but nope. Then I was thinking they came in with the mangroves but they were wrapped in wet newspaper and took 7 days to reach me, and I had them sitting in my second shallow for 12 hours. Don't know, maybe just one of those things. I like em anyhow, they are cool and as long as they are happy I am too.

Ok... I shut up now.

Do you guys concure on the Hydromedusae jellyfish thing?

Thanks.

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

Welcome to TRT!!!

I agree that it looks like some kind of a jelly. That is a very cool find. How many have you found in that deep tank now? Is the deep tank lit at all? If it is not, then that may be part of the key to your mystery.

Thanks for the welcome. The 3 tanks are right next to each other so its the furthest from the MH but still receives some light, but with the mangrove shade it is considerably less. I have seen some larger and smaller ones. Maybe about 30 or so. I took one out and looked at it under a microscope, totally cool, you can watch the bell crinkle up and see the little tentacles. They are really active at night and if i shine my LED flashlight in there, they seem to come up to it and check things out. I had no idea they could even sense light unless its a coincidence.

It looks like they have gone through a generation because I have a lot of active little babies in there now. I found a couple in the macro tank (which is upstream from where they were at first, so they had to cycle through the display tank to get there) as well now. I hope the fish can chew on them without getting hurt. Everybody seems to be doing great though. It is pretty cool finding free stuff in your system.... well... good free stuff that is!

Ah yes, there is a huge difference between good free stuff and bad free stuff. All to often we see the bad free stuff more than the good.

Thanks for sharing this information with us.
