What's the Truth About Toxins From Plastic Buckets

New to the marine aquarium game, I am eager to learn everything I can.

I find lot's of conflicting information regarding the use of plastic buckets and equipment to mix, store and handle water for introduction to my reef. My LFS says it's all hogwash and that he has used new plastic buckets and garbage pails for twenty years with no problem. I have also heard from a few purists who insist on food grade plastic containers cured with salt and chlorine and then dechlorinated.

Considering my tank is half ABS plastic, my salt comes in plastic buckets, my fish come in plastic bags, and my supplements come in plastic bottles, I can't imagine what the problem would be.

What's the consensus at TRT? Anybody have any confirmed bad experiences with plastic toxins?

I look forward to what anyone has to say.

I like to give a new bucket a real good rinse... but that is about it and have not personally had problems or heard stories of problems that I remember

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

The only issue I know if is rinsing when new in order to remove any residue from the manufacturing process or any that may accumulate during shipping or while in retail situations.

I only use lab grade pyrex buckets, but I use old tires instead of live rock. Does it balance out?

I wouldn't worry dude, there are waaaaaay more important things to keep you occupied with your tank than how clean your buckets are.

A few months back, someone said that their LFS was selling "ro/di compatible buckets".

I have been using the orange Home Depot buckets for years without any problems. rinse them, label them and don't use them for anything else.
