RO/DI System From storage.

Hey all...

I've found my RO/DI system (Kent Marine 24GPD) that I thought got tossed, and its been sitting in storage for the past 3 years. With water in it.

I know nothing about the unit other then what I've found online, and have no clue what I need to do to get it working again.

I tossed the filters, and know I need to replace at least part of the tubing (the clear tubing had mold growing in it) so I know I need to do some re-plumbing of the tubes at least.

My question is, how can I tell if the RO Membrane is bad. fire it up with new filters, or should I just look at replacing it anyways. The Frame, and the plastic canisters (clear) are in good shape, and everything else looks ok.

I'd like to salvage it, so looking for some opinions about this RODI unit.
Thanks all

-Paul

Just assume that the membrane is bad.

Take it apart as much as reasonable, soak it in a bleach/water mix, scrub, rinse and dry. Replace all the filters and you should be good to go

Thanks for all the advice!

Looking at filters for it, looks like a set will run about 50 bucks.
The Membrane (24GPD) will be another 50ish.

Almost seems like I may as well get a new unit from h20Guru over fix this one up.

Least then I won't have to do the cleanup, and have spare parts for a new unit.

Shop around for filters

You can replace the flow restricter for about $4, put a 50gpd membrane in it for $36 bucks and a full lower filter set for under $20.

That would be a 50gpd unit for cheap

But you're going to have to replace some of the hardware if you change the membrane type. Either way, you can surely replace filters cheaper than buying a whole new unit.

I Disassembled majority of the unit. Looking at everything it looks like only the clear tubing had mold growing inside and outside of it. The others were "sealed" with semi-filtered water in the lines. I picked up some new clear tubing and think the other tubing (yellow/orange) is prob ok for use.
I did not remove the fittings, just the tubing. I'm going to scrub everything I can to clean it up and then run the system w/out any filters/membrane in it with Distilled water mixed with a little bleach for awhile to try and clear it out.

After that I'll flush it with tap water, and then install the new Pre-filters, run a little, and then put the new membrane and DI filter on. After that I'll let it run & then take some water to my LFS and have them test it for me.

Soon as I get this up and running, I'll begin cooking my (dead) Live rock with some new uncured rock from my LFS to start seeding it again, and getting things going.

So I got my new filters, and began installing them last night.

I didn't put the membrane in yet, because I wanted to check to see if anyone knows how many O Rings are in the RO Housing unit.

I've got 1 that goes on the cap (where the water flows in), but I've read elsewhere 2 go in the unit.

Can anyone confirm O rings for the housing?
