Okay, so set up a fuge seperate from the sump, maybe pull a low flow from the tank drains before the sump/skimmer and clean as needed. Keep it simple with just macro and let it do its thing. With low flow the macro has better exposure to the water to absorb the fertilizer but eventually through the day, all water gets to the skimmer also. Not a fix all but a little kick to the nutrient export. If your accepting of the cleaning you will have to do then why not?

if you actually have enough nutrients in the water to support the algae than that is fine. the question then becomes why is the algae able to grow (that is unless you are trying to grow algae. )?

would it not make more sense to make an ATS, if this is your plan? the maintenance would be much easier. plus micro algae is much faster at nutrient uptake than macro algae. that whole surface area thing.
