raereefer, the same thing happened to me. All along, I have been mixing my water to 1.025 using my hydrometer. Today at lunch, FedEx delivered my new refractometer from the good Drs. After calibrating with distilled water, I measured my tank water, and it was at 1.029. I took a little tank water out and added distilled back in. I will measure again after work and adjust again if necessary. One of these days, I'll get some calibration solution so I can calibrate closer to my target SG instead of 1.000.
BTW, how does the manufacturer of a calibration solution calibrate its solution? And what calibrates the calibrator? Way back when, what did the original calibrating dude use to calibrate his calibrator? And how do we know that calibrator wasn't off by a few degrees?
Same question applies to the atomic clock. How do we know for sure that it's set to the right time?
