Pvc cement

got pinholes in glued pvc parts-can I just add more cement to the outside of the joint to seal it or should it be some other substance? (there is water in the pipe).

Would silicone be a better substance to be using? Would it seal the hole, and would it dry with water behind it? Sorry for the double post question, but just read about someone's question regarding the silicone and thought maybe its better than using extra pvc cement?

In most cases extra PVC cement will work, make sure to empty or depressurize the line first so the water doesnt push its way through the new cement as it's hardening.

Wouldnt hurt to prime the joint again before gluing..let it sit for at least 30 minutes before putting the pressure back to it but any longer and the water in the pipes will start to go bad. Depending on how much pipe we are talking about could be anywhere from unimportant to super important.

Is there anyway to do this with water in the pipe? I ask because I just about have to fill the sump with about 30 gal. before it gets to where the pipe is...to empty, and refill to recheck is a big thing to do...the holes are like pinholes around already joined pvc pipe, its just got a pinhole place where water is extremely slowly dripping-but that I don't want to leave as I'm sure will grow to a much larger hole if not plugged up somehow. I was thinking to just go around the seam area with more cement, but figured I'd ask if this is the way to do this...I think it should be stronger than silicone, I just don't know if it should be pvc cement followed by silicone or some other substance that I could really coat the joint. Any thoughts, suggestions further or should I just hit it with the cement?

To be sure...are we talking pinholes that leak air and create microbubbles or pinholes that leak water?????

Water, it is a very slow drip, but its there. No air yet as I'm just filling to test the new piping and finding fine holes where I guess I didn't do a great job joining the pvc to elbows and such.

I hate to tell you this but chances are pretty slim that you will permanently fix the leak without cutting out and redoing the bad joints, and if it does stop it is salt build up in between the pipe and fitting that most likely will be stopping it. I for some reason though we were talking about microbubbles which can be fixed by primer and glue over the joint sometimes.
When gluing any joint you want to get it fully primed and glued and then when possible at least one full twist into place.....it will not ever leak if you do that.
You can try to cover the bad joint in glue after priming the seam but again..........but more likely than not it wont fix it.

sorry

there is a super stretchy silly cone tape that i found a HD that does a pretty good job at sealing joints. you just stretch it as tightly as you can around the joint for about 3-4 wrapps and it seals it. does a pretty good job.

Thanks all, for your help! I will try the cement and if I gotta go further, look for that silly cone tape-I don't understand why I have a drip as I did prime well with the purple stuff and wasn't cheap with the cement-I did turn the pipe until It stuck well, and now this tiny drip....the purple and the cement melt the pvc and kinda mold it into one piece, right? If I use just the cement on the edge will it melt the pipe? There is purple sticking out past the where the two pieces join.

FWIW, i would find that stuff Geoff was talking about........ : ) IME Pipes leaking water arent that easy to fix, especially with water in them.
