overflow boxes

i have everything i need for my sump setup except for the pump itself, i plan on a mag 5 or mag7 pump for my return. the overflow box that i am going to use has a 1-1/16" I.D. u-tube syphon and a 1" I.D.pvc pipe for the drain. how many gph will 1" tubing handle? i will be pumping up 4feet to my tank the mag5 will pump 310gph and the mag 7 was 480gph then it jumps up to 800gph for the mag 9.5. does the pump have to match the overflow exactly or can one be stronger than the other? it seems to me that if my pump doesnt keep up with the overflow i would lose syphon, and if the overflow didnt keep up with the pump the overflow woudl overflow. or does water only syphon as fast as it flows into the overflow? the only thing on the overflow box is the name brand eshopps

a 1" siphon U tube will handle about 300 GPH IME
I would go with the mag 5, keep it all the way open, try to use a litttle less head so maybe you can get 330 or so to sweep air blockages out of the u tube

Also be sure that the outer box has a water level lower than the inside box. The lower the better, this will create a faster flow throught the u-tube and if its fast enough you will be able to get the max flow through the tube and the velocity will help prevent bubbles from building up in the tube.

a 1" drain is rated to about 600gph. a U-tube can handle even more than this.

it looks like the Mag 7 would be a very good fit.
