Newbie setup.

Hello all.
I am just getting into saltwater and have purchased an AGA 40 gallon breeder. I want to set this up as an anemone/clownfish tank. Live rock, live sand and no corals right now. Questions:

Powerheads: Number and size?

Heater: Wattage?

Skimmer: Recommendations?

I am just researching/price checking before I set the tank up to start the cycling process. Any other recommendations would be great.

Thanks,
Quickcord.

Welcome to TRT!!

uhh, ohh, you said the A word, anemone.

most anemones need very strong lighting. what kind of lighting were you thinking of using? a 40 breeder is pretty shallow so you may be able to get away with a fully packed T5 flourescent canopy. i would suggest a couple of 150w HQI Metal halids or a couple of 175w mogul metal halides though. these give more of the light the anemones are looking for.

if you stick with bubble tip anemones you should be fine with any strong lighting combination. if you are looking at other kinds of anemones i would really strongly suggest getting a MH setup.

do you have a sump for the tank? if not i would suggest a AquaC remora skimmer.

i prefer the Ebo-Jager heaters. i would think a 75w should be fine for that sized tank.

as for flow. the new Seio pumps are pretty good for the price and wattage.

Thanks for the reply.
I am debating sump or no sump and still have not decided.
What size Seio? The lighting I will get to later as I have an empty tank at the momment and I am going to wait a few months before adding the fish and BTA. Right now I am just getting pieces before doing the puzzle.

I would wait longer to add an anemone. They do best in a well matured tank. Like a year. Not what people want to hear but that is best for the animal and the responsible way top deal with it. A year may be along time but how much do you want to spoend on replacing animals? You may get one and it may do great, kinda a shot in the dark. i would say let the tank mature. It takes far longer than a few months for a tank to truly cycle and mature.

Ok. I had a friend give me a Coralife Super Skimmer 65
I also purchased 2 Seio 620 powerheads and the Ebo-Jager heater 100w. Now as far as lighting goes, can anyone recommend a good setup? I do not have a canopy/hood and was looking for a complete set up. The Anemone I would be getting will be a BTA in 10 to 12 months.

Thanks,
Quickcord

Well you are going to get some debate here over what type of lighting to use. My personal opinion is T5 lights, but I might be a little biased. You can get a Tek T5 complete hood for a pretty decent price. The T5s put out alot of useable light with out all the heat.

on a 40 breeder T5's should be plenty. that is a nice shallow tank so light penetration is not that big of a concern.
