Nano skimmer

I have a 12gal AquaPod with the factory setup. However, I have taken everything out of the filter except for the sponge and a small bag of carbon to help with clarity. I have seen the Current USA Fission Nano Skimmer a couple times. I think I would be able to place it in one of the chambers in my sump. I have a lid with built in lighting so I cannot open the lid. I think my filtration setup right now is adequate and I do a 16.6% water change every week (for those who are exact).

More to the point I dont really know what a protein skimmer does and why I want one. I was always told they were a must have in reef care, but I have a decent nano and my livestock seems happy. The price on that skimmer is such that I would certainly be willing to try it out and I wouldnt be too upset if it was a waste.

Has anyone had a good experience or bad with this skimmer?
Will it work if I place it in one of the chambers in my sump?
If so should I place it before or after my sponge and carbon?

I think I mentioned before in a different thread that my daughter also has a 12G nano very similar to yours (here's the build thread if you're interested http://www.thereeftank.com/forums/f2...be-112412.html)...we don't run a skimmer on it at all...IMO tanks smaller than about 30G's don't need them...just regular water changes should suffice...we even removed the sponge and just run some carbon and phos media in a mesh bag...the sponge is OK, just make sure you rinse it every few days to keep accumulated junk from breaking down.
