How to place T5 light fixture?

I am going to purchase a T5 light fixture for my 55G tank. Top dimension is typical 48' x 13" with a divider in the middle. Do I have to buy a clear plastic lid for the light to sit on or is it better not to cover? How do I place the light over the tank then?

I for one don't like placing anything between the fixture and the water, I also think it's nice to hang the lights above the tank if you can

Yeah, I agree about not covering the tank. There are a number of options for placing the light, including just resting it on the rim of the tank or hanging it from the ceiling. Either of those work for you?

What about running a 4 bulb 48inch and a 2 bulb 48 inch from www.fishneedit.com ? Not sure which light is better.

My tank is built into the wall and I only have about 3 inches of clearance from the top of the tank so I'm guessing my only choice is to cover with glass canopy then place a light over it?

If you don't cover the tank, wouldn't you risk of fishing jumping out and quicker water evaporation?

yes, you do risk those things if not otherwise mitigated.

To Keep Fish in Tank

To keep the fish in your tank I have had success with using plastic Eggcrate (not what it sounds like) from homedepot of Lowes. If you have eels, this will not work to keep the small ones in. IE: If an eel is smaller than .5-.75 inches in diameter it will slip through the square holes.

This is what you are looking for.

Eggcrate blocks too much light. Check out this thread. Very slick idea.
