Welcome to TRT!!!

the skilter is not the best filter system for your tank. i think you would be better off getting real skimmer and just using that instead of the skilter. something like a Bak-Pak skimmer would be fine.

Welcome to TRT! Skiter do make alot of noise. To make it quiter and better is shut the air off and instead use a airstone at the bottom of the skimmer with an airpump. But getting a better skimmer is better.

no you would not need to get another filter. most of us only use a skimmer and LR for all of our filtering. the skimmer does the mechanical filtration while the LR does the biological. this is all i have on my system. the only other thing you need to do is siphon out detritus whenever you do a water change.

in a SW tank it is very, very important to siphon out detritus tha accumulates on the bottom of the tank. it is usually a grey fluffy stuff that will go water born with the slightest brush of water in the area. unfortunately is that the detritus tends to accumulate in the hardest to reach areas of the tank. depending on your substrate siphoning detritus can be troublesome.

if detritus is left to sit it will leach its phosphates into the SB. these phosphates can then work their way up through the LR. this will lead to hair algae and cyano problems.

i do 15g water changes every week. i have extreme flow so i get very little detritus in the tank itseld. i do however get it in the sump. i siphon it out of the sump during the WC. what i mean be extreme flow is 7000gph in a 125g tank.

Hmmm....I doubt that powerhead puts out that much flow. Probably more like 75 gall/hour. It will still work nicelu in that size tank though.
