Heaters

Hi,
I recently went without power for a week and was unable to get a generator to sustain my power needs during this disaster. Subsequently, my two tanks were done, they all died. I am currently in the process of reestablishing life and need to make sure this does not happen again.

First question, outside of buying a nice expensive generator are there any battery operated heaters for emergency use? I think for the most part that would have saved my fish.

Second question, what do you guys suggest for emergency equipment for smaller tanks to larger tanks.
