being from Edmonton, you may be able to keep you tanks cool enough without a chiller. some of us in the sub tropics have a hard time keeping our tanks below 80F. a chiller is a titanium refrigerator for cooling liquids. some are drop in others are in line.

when you start adding Metal Halide bulbs to a system keeping the tank cool quickly becomes a problem.

I didn't have a problem with my tanks temperature until I put a MH on it. My tank would rise to 86F and higher when the light was on. I had to get a chiller to cool it down. It kind of depends on the size of the tank how much the temp will rise. You also would not want to run the heater and the chiller too close (temperature wise) together because then they will fight each other unless you have a controller that will control both.
