Can you recommend quiet and cool return and skimmer pumps?
Hi everyone,
I'm a newbie and I have a 65 gal soft coral reef tank. My aquarium sits in a cabinet with a sump below. My current Mag Pumps make a really loud HUM and they heat my water too much. I'm looking for two more quiet and cooler pumps. The distance from the top water line of my tank to the sump below is 4'. What brand and size return and skimmer pumps would you recommend for my system - must be quiet and cool. Thanks for your help!
Laurie

The one and only... Eheim. You simply cannot get better. They are the quietest and most dependable pumps in the trade

I upgraded to a QuietOne 4000, and I love it. It runs cooler, pumps more (~700gph @3.5' est), costs less ($53), and uses less power (<50watts) than my old mag 5. I can't imagine a sub-pump that would work much better.
Skimmer pumps? As in needle wheel pumps or reg pumps?

You guys and your Ehiems, I could buy three QuietOne 4000's for the price of a 1262 and pump more through 4' head. Ze German pump es superior, lol.

LOL... Quiet ones have always been iffy to me...they are hit or miss, I wanted something dependable the first time so i went with the Eheim

Jason's question is the key here...
There are better pumps then Eheims, but they're made in Germany as well. A Red Dragon will smoke an Eheim in both performance and quietness, but this all comes with a hefty price tag.

Absolutely right... need to know more about the skimmer... is the pump just a feed pump for it (ie recirculating skimmer?) or is it a AquaC or something similar?
you can get a pump that is very close to the dragon (as far as air draw) for several hundred less from MSX

Very true Tony... I've been considering one of their return pumps. Amazing how much water they move compared to the watts they pull.
I wish they sold just the volute and impeller for the return set up, I've got an Askoll from an Octo that I'm not using.
