what is

A non reef safe fish anyway?

is it a fish that is good with other fish?

is it a fish that is good only with the same type ?
Does it mean it is a "meat eater"?
or does it mean any fish that does get corals?

if it means one that eats corals does that include fish that dont eat corals but like to eat things we like or want in our tanks like a clean up crew?

Well Tim I think of it as a fish that will harm my corals, clams or my bio system. One that will eat my shrimp or starfish. I think of a feef tanks coral , some fish and crabs, shrimp clams and the like. many fish are not reef safe to me , I won't even put in a pigmy angel, lion , . That what I think of a non reef safe fish.

Now see I am willing to risk a bit more. I have a puffer in my reef tank(temporarily, but he is going to be there for a couple months). Now I will not so foolishly put a starfish in here, but I do have corals, other fish, snails (getting fewer everyday need to buy more ), hermit crabs (I did NOT invite them, they came with the LR and my puffer is not eating them argh!), worms, feather dusters large and small, sponges, etc. You get the idea.

I don't consider him not reef safe but I don't consider him completely reef safe either. He is okay CONDITIONALLY in a reef setting like 90% of the fish that are available to the saltwater aquarist. His conditions are this, he eats crustaceans and may not be safe with some soft flesh invertebrates. Some fish have conditions like not with less aggressive fish, no corals, etc.

There are very few fish that can be safely kept in a full reef setting, and equally few that can't have any type of reef system in their tank.

Well just to add, I agree here with You Caoineag, That I won't place the ones mentioned in my tank , I have things that I want to keep. But on the other had I like some of the large angels and have been thinking of setting up a reef and with some testing and good luck fine the things they don't want to eat so I can have them in a tank that will appeal to them. and still have some corals. I have my trigger tank and really want an angel tank. It really depends on what you are wanting. No really right or wrong, when it comes to down to it.
