Suddenly got microbubbles

I have a 46 gallon setup for now. It’s been setup for a month now. Last week I got a Coralife 36’’ Deluxe Lunar series fixture. My issue is I run both of the bulbs for 10 to 12 hours. After about 4 hours I notice bubbles coming from the sand. After about 8 hours my Fluval canister filter is periodically spitting out bursts of microbubbles. By hour 10 the entire tank is filled with microubbles. It’s really beginning to irritate me. When I turn the light on in the morning everything is fine. Water is not overloaded with microbubbles, fluval canister filter is not spitting bubbles out. Does anyone have any idea?

sounds like you have the beginnings of a cyano problem. how often do you clean the cannister? if used like a cannister filter it needs to be cleaned daily. if not than you are just feeding the nutrient levels in the tank. i suggest getting rid of the cannister completely. do you have a protein skimmer? if not i would look into getting one. skimmers remove nutreints immediately from the water column. cannister filters keep the nutrients in the water column. if allowed to rot than the nutrients are not even removed when you clean the cannister. this is why it is important to clean a cannister filter as often as possible. daily is best.

the bubbles are prolly caused by cyanobacteria. as it breaks down nutrients it releases gasses into the water column. as the day goes on the more cyano there is and the more bubbles there are.

you need to start siphoning out detritus from the tank whenever you do water changes. any of the grey/brown floaty stuff that is around the LR is what you need to remove. sounds like you may also need to siphon the top layer of your sand to pull as many nutrients out of it as possible.

Man. Are you serious? I was hoping this was all part of the cycling process. What’s the point of a canister filter if I have to clean it everyday? That sucks because the box says only needs to be cleaned once a month. Man I got hosed!

Well here is an update. All the microbubbles from the sand have stopped and now the filter is running smooth. I spoke with the LFS yesterday and they seem to think that the bubble were for my tank cycling. They said it was part of the nitrate to nitrite process. I couldn't tell you if they are right or not. I'm just happy the bubbles stopped. I was worried something was wrong with my filter. Anyway was thanks for your advise. I will need lots more in the near future.
