Dog face puffer

I remember reading somewhere that a dog face will not really grow in captivity, is this true?? I really really want one but I know that a full grown one needs like a 150g tank. If I get a small one what size tank will it need and is it true that it won't grow so much in captivity??

I know the narrowlined puffer (similar to dogface and often referred to as a narrowlined dogface puffer because of it) has issues with not growing to its full 12 inches in captivity. I did a lot of research on him because no one really had a good answer. Most say he would only get to 6 inches in captivity. I am currently setting up my 125g for mine which should suit him no matter his final size due to activity preference.

Chances are they won't get to full size BUT most people recommend planning for the full size.

However, if the traditional dogface is too big for what you are willing to go for, consider some of the rarer versions like the narrowlined. That way you don't put too big a fish in too small a tank.

Ahhh yes I figured what I heard was incorrect information. A girl can dream can't she?

My puffer will just have to wait a couple of years until we buy a house and have room for it.

Thank you for the info Caoineag whatever I had read was probably about the narrowline.

When we have room for I'll inherit the 150 reef we're setting up and my husband will upgrade to a larger reef tank.

Forgive me if this sounds mushy, but It really makes my day when someone like you decides to pass on keeping an animal they love because of care requirements. You have done the right thing, I encourage others to look at you as a great example of someone that has done the right thing even though this is a fish that you obviously really like. You could have just as easily bought the fish and worried about its care requirments later on...Kudos! Responsible fish/reef keeping is important to the longevity of our hobby.

It's not mushy at all! Thank you very much...jeeze I never thought of myself as a great example of anything! lol

I just couldn't stand buying a puffer and then it not thriving or dying due to improper conditions. I'd rather wait till it's right and have it thrive!

I'd go with the fact that it matters what size the tank is. If you're putting him into a smaller tank, as with any large fish, he will not grow to his full potential size. But, if you find the minimum gallons for him, and add around 20 gallons, you should have yourself a full size dog faced puffer

GET THE THING! haha

I recently purchased a dog face puffer and if you can find a way to keep one i recommend you give it a try. I have only had mine for a week and he is already eat out of my hand, he loves Krill. when i sit near the tank he comes over to the glass to see what im doing, he's a great fish.
