75g FOWLR

Well I'm quickly approaching completion of my new tanks.

One of them is a 75g.

This is going to be a FOWLR. Depending what fish I end up with I might add some shrooms for colour. I don't want to put much $$ in to lights.

Anyways my LFS has a pair of bluethroat triggers. They are small ~3in tops I would guesstimate.

I know that these fish do get large (about a foot). But I also read that they are slow growers. So would a pair of these be alright for a couple of years at least in my tank?

Thanks!

not sure. 3" is pretty small for them. they are very shy feeders at first. my 6" male is just now coming out when i am near the tank and he is 2 months old in the tank. he was a bear to get eating also. i am lucky though. i figured out that if i put the frozen food in the sump (located 45' away in the basement) that he was a lot more likely to be out and willing to eat when the food arrived in the tank. when i would try and put food in the tank directly he would hide. the only food he would get would be the food that happened to make it into the cave he was hiding in.

they also need to be fed heavily. i left for vacation for a week and it was quite skinny by the time i came back. this was with a neighbor coming in and feeding 3 times when i was away. i feed the tank 2 times a day. he is just now beginning to get fat again. planktonivores are not a feeding type i would recommend for a tank with a substrate. i belive planktonivores are best kept in BB tanks where the amount of feeding is irrelevent. the skimmer will take it all out.

Good info Geoff
I'm still considering a few different ideas for this setup.
The male bluethroat was in a tank at the LFS without a female when I first saw him and he was shy. Mostly hiding behind a filter. He'd come out a bit then dart back. However after the female was added he was out swimming around (and so was she) much more.

I don't know if this is common for them in pairs to be more assertive? Do you have a female as well?

They look healthy but I haven't asked to see them eat yet.
There's also a nice looking pinktail there.
I just like triggers it seems!

Thanks Geoff

i also like the triggers. i only have the male. do not know if they are more assertive in pairs or not.

so far it is doing fine in my full blown reef. plenty of clams and plenty of corals, not problems so far.
