A reef in hobby terms is coral, inverts, and fish I believe. As opposed to only rocks and fish, with possible inverts.

thanks for that..
so if I set up a saltwater tank with live rock, corals and CaribSea aragonite, would that be considered as a reef tank?

in short, yes.
Think of the Great Barrier Reef off of Australia - there are fish and rocks but also corals, crabs, snails, etc.
What is your first language?
Good luck! Hope we can help!

A reef is a natural barrier that protects a coastline from storm surge. It is built over millions and billions of years. It is built by two components: the skeletons of stoney coral and coralline algae. We all love the look of the living surfaces of the natural reef and try to create a reasonable facsimile thereof in our own tanks in our homes. ONE GREAT HOBBY! I'm an addict!

hop on in, no stupid questions here!!
a closed loop or CLS is a way to increase the flow in a tank without adding powerheads or adding more flow through the sump.
CLS are completely below the water line. they are completely filled with water, no air in the system at all. hence the reason they are called closed. they are great for creating flow back behind the aquascaping. adding powerheads back behind LR is asking for trouble. if the PH were to ever fail you have to take out the LR to get to it. a CLS since it is external to the tank you can replace the pump without having to disturb your aquascaping.
i have 3 seperate CLS on my tank.

Welcome to TRT Chuck ! A closed loop is water being pumped from the tank and returned back to the tank in a loop. It is a way to get extra water flow without having powerheads in the display.
Not a stupid question at all
