Bad experience for me also with clowns:
Clown picked on and killed a hippo tang, a cleaner shrimp, and my favorite FIRE FISH lol
My pair of false percs do well with my other fish. Of course, my tank is fairly large, but other fish swim around my clowns and the clowns tend to ignore them unless they seem intent on settling into their home. My clowns aren't terribly large either, so that may factor into the situation. I've heard that some species, such as maroon clowns, are more aggressive than others.

I also like the royal gramma, the bangaii cardinal, the clown gobies, and the firefish for reefs.

I have to agree with Goeff, I have a tomato clown and he has taken up permanent residence in my sebae anemone. He will only go after a shrimp, I have 3 or my other fish if they come to close to his home, but that is usually just to chase them off.

Royal grammas are great...I've had mine in a reef for 3+ years and have never had a problem.

I would also add dwarf lions to the reef safe..but not crab/shrimp safe list. I have kept a Mombasa lion I'm my reef for several months now without incident. Note...they are big eaters so they add more bioload than other 5-6" fish.

I had a Bicolor Pseudochromis and I watched it pick apart a Coral Banded Shrimp as soon as it went into the tank. That sucked.

I have a funny situation in my tank right now. My GS Maroon Clown has taken up residence in my Bubble Coral. The Neon Dottyback swims in and out of the coral and the Clown doesn't ever go after it. It's pretty fun to watch them. They've almost buddied up. It's as if the Clown is less aggressive than the Dottyback.
