Andrew, I agree - I was a bit surprised at the reef safe list - maybe all those fish are safe for corals, but hawkfish are NOT safe for shrimps, crabs, and other invertebrates. Use the list with caution - -

as a single fish, those clowns tend to be well behaved. if they have something to host in they are even better behaved. they tend to protect only the host area.

This might be a good place to ask this. I read at liveaquaria that it would be ok to keep difrent species of clown fish in the same tank aslong as they were introduced at the same time. Has any one had any experence with this? I still have not put any fish in my 24 gal Nano And I would like to keep a couple of clowns. And I like the way that the diffrent species look. Just throwing it out there.

I had a maroon clown and a Percula clown. The maroon would constantly nudge the smaller Percula, many times moving the smaller away from food or a comforting spot in the tank...the Tang would always break them up, preventing the bullying of the maroon clown from going overboard...

i know this is way late, but i was just reading around and found this thread. what about a royal gramma? i was under the impression that this is a very reefsafe fish and community compatible as well.

royal gramma's are a great choice as a reef safe fish. some can be aggressive, but generally they are not.

if clowns were the size of sharks, nobody would ever dive in the reefs again. this list really does depend on the criteria... coral safe, invert safe, fish safe, etc...

Hey, What about jawfish. They're my favorite, and mine has not bothered anything. You can even have multiple ones in a large tank.I'd stay away from cardinals with shrimp though.I had to perform a small fire shrimp rescue when my cardinals were stalking it.At about 1 1/2 inches it was going to be lunch.1 thing I've heard is to have the inverebrates in place in the tank, before the fish.I'm not sure how that works, they won't eat roommates that were there first? All I know is I had a larger cleaner shrimp when I got the cardinals and they never bothered it.I'm waiting for this guy to grow some before I re-introduce him though. There are also plenty of reef safe wrasse, too. With their small mouths they can't swallow anyone. Watch gobies, blennys, and jawfish. They can be buttholes sometimes. ask pastina. I used to have have a bicolor blenny that I would find in my cup coral. He would nip at it and some parts of the coral faded. Ive seen my prawn watchman in my fiji leather, and he'll take a little nip sometimes. Im not saying they dont make good reef fish , most absoulutley do, but watch out on some of them and do alot of reaserch before you get one.
