Unhappy

small tang

i have been doing a lot of reading today after getting my tang and have realized i might have made a big mistake. the mistake being listening to the guy at the fish store instead of reading first because i have now found that it is not a good idea to have a tang no matter how small in a 20 g. my tang is only 2 " im in the process of getting another tank but it will be about a month and im thinking about a 75 gallon but it will have to be set up and cycled befor i could move the tang. is this gonna be a problem? for what is worth there are only 2 othe clown fish in the tank which are both a little more than a inch as of now.

He will be fine for a while but you should get him into a larger tank ASAP. What kind of tang is it? Most tangs will do much better in a 6 foot tank than in a 4 foot tank. I have a yelklow tang in my 90 gallon and I think I will need to take it back to the fish store. They really need to have some swimming room, an 8 foot tank would really be best for any tang. They will live just fine in a 4 foot tank but they would be much much much happier in a longer tank.

thank you for the help. would a month and a few days be to long to be considered asap. and from what you said it looks like i should be looking for a long rather than tall tank?

tall tanks are harder to light for corals. it is also the longer swim length you are looking for for tangs. most agree that a 4' tank is minimum for tangs, but longer is always better. i think 6' is more realistic though. in the wild they are large area browsers.

I would keep any eye out for a used 125. It has great length for tangs. As others said the 75 is doable but not ideal. It is still a 4 ft tank.
