signal goby

i have a couple of questions about a signal goby. i couldnt find an answer on this one: can your sand be too chunky for the signal goby to sift through, because my signal goby is not near full grown. Is the finer the sand the better? Also, can the signal goby feed through the sand only? or do they have to be fed too. i have a good amount of pods though. thanks

yes, the sand can be to big. the finer the better. some just want to eat out of the sand and will not accept prepared foods. this can be a problem they can clean out a sand bed in quick order.

they are not looking for pods to eat, but worms and other infauna in the sand. pods tend to be in the LR.

Singal gobies generally fair poorly in captivity as do most sand sifting fish. They generally are collected with internal parasites and do not get enough food from the sandbed to sustain them for more than a few months. They also very rarely accept prepared foods. I kept a pair for approx. a year and got them to eat very small particles of mysis and brine by dropping small portions of this food down a plastic tube close to where they were sifting the same. The clear tube did not spook them and it allowed the food to get in and around the sand they were sifting. Unfortunely they still wasted away from internal parasites.
