Red Hairy Lobster

Anyone have one of these? My LFS has one, i was watching it for so long, it was so cool! It was about 5'' or so, beautiful color, eating and in great health. Anyone have experience with these?

lobsters are generally easy to keep. the problem with them is that they are destructive. they move rocks around while they are digging their homes. they can also eat a lot of different things that you may not want them to in the tank. if they can catch it they will prolly eat it.

they make a nice species only tank. they do not need much room either. as long as they have a place to hide they are happy.

I have a dwarf reef lobster who I am suspicious of. A few things came up missing i.e. snails soft corals. Luckily he is in an experimental 5 gal. IMO they really arent worth the money because you will really never see them with your lights on. Once they find a good spot ...there they will stay only to come out to grab food.

They tend to be more destructive than cool. I thought it would be fun to have one, but I never saw it. It'd come out during feeding time and that's about it. It would also kill or injure many of my smaller reef fish with its claws.

I've had a purple spiny lobster for years. He has been nothing short of a model citizen in my reef. I think the key is to keep them fed. I drop him shrimp pellets periodically and he is fine. I dont think he's ever killed anything.

I had a red hawiian reef lobster in my 55gal. It would eat frozen food and shrimp pellets but at night it was a different story. He hunted down all my small gobies in their sleep. They are very cool but I would put it in a tank by itself.

Beautiful creatures, but a species tank, as G said, is a good safe bet.
