Question about gobies

I know not all gobies burrow in the sand, and some will pair with shrimp, not sure of all the kinds that do this(burrow)or (pair with shrimp) Information on them would be great. Also, on the burrowing kind, how deep of a sandbed is usually required??

Check out this link:

As far as how deep you need to be, I don't know if there is any surefire answer to that. I would say at least 4" myself.

Thank you for the reply. Hopefully more will follow, with types of burrowing gobies or shrimp pairing gobies. Thanks for the link as well, there are some really cool looking gobies. Oh and for reference, this is a 24g aquapod reef setup.

i would say 2" is bare minimum. i would go at least 4 to be sure so that the substrate will at least function properly.

Thanks geoff, you've posted in a couple of my other threads inquiring about DSB(maybe you remember) but was thinking about either doing a remote DSB instead of in the main tank, and going with a less deep one in the main tank, that's the reason for this new thread about minimum sand depth for gobies.

depending on what the goby eats, the depth in the main tank may have to be at least 4-6" in depth. several of the sand sifting gobies need the food in the DSB to survive. only if the bed is this deep will the food critters have a chance of surviving and reproducing enough to keep up with the depletion going on by the goby. having a DSB remotely will not help this situation. the critters in the remote SB will not get to the display in enough numbers to keep up with the predation if the display bed is shallow. they need time to grow, which is not possible with heavy predation on a shallow bed.

if the goby just digs and does not filter the SB than a 2" depth is prolly ok, but not optimal. the shallower the bed the bigger the LR will need to be to be stable. the goby will easily go down to the glass with a 2" depth. it will then undermine the rock to make more room.

Thanks again geoff, you've pretty much covered all questions I had, sticking with a DSB in the main tank then, bb sump/fuge with chaeto, no remote dsb.
