Puffers
I'm just thinking about getting a small puffer. Whats the pos/negs about them? Right now i have two clowns, and cherub angel, sixline in 55g w LR. In two months or so i would like to get some soft corals, and an anenome.
Also looking at getting a tang, Anybody have one that will generally stay pretty small???

it depends on the puffer but if it will get big and will eat fish smaller than him. and not reef safe. also 55G is not big enough for a puffer. They are really messy eaters too i had a porqupine puffer before.

true puffers get very large. the smaller tobies are much smaller. even these are not really considered reef safe. they tend to nip at corals.

I have a purc puffer now and he is maybe the size of a small child. They grow fast and are very sloppy. As combiemaster said. I had mine in my reef for maybe 2 days than he started picking. so not the best idea. just my input

I have a valentini puffer and a green spotted puffer both in my 65.... neither of them bothers any of my corals. I had a false eyed puffer in my 46..but he ended up being too mean..so I returned him to the LFS... I think each puffer has its own personality though.
The valentini puffer loves macro algae...and both love mysis shrimp.
If you get a puffer...you have to provide small snails (mine like tiny cerith snails) ... or the occasional shrimp shell/crab leg for them to chew on... or their teeth will grow too long ( like a rabbits ). If this happens...it can prevent them from being able to eat.
Pics of my puffers ... the first two fish:

i had a valentini puffer, didnt pick at anything, only thing he would do is occasionaly snap at a hermit then would leave it alone. He was really hardy, survived the worst case of itch ive ever seen, i finally gave him away when i tore down the tank he was in. Great fish.

Also have Valentini puffer, it's small, bright colored, intelligent and considerate. In the same tank with lionfish and tasseled filefish, blood shrimps, porcelain crab, hermits, LPS and softies. No harm to anybody, except 2 XL turbo-snails.
It's refused to eat shellfish or mollusks on the shell, teeth are overgrown - have to do the puffer dentistry under anaesthesia in a near future.

I have the Valentini and as per the earlier post, he is eating all my snails and nothing else. Doesn't bother coral tho.
