powder blue tang temp

i got a powder blue tang on saturday and he is eating and is swimming around pretty good but i cant seem to keep the temp always on the exact same degree. it always fluctuates a degree or two. it will be 78.0 then 79.7 degrees or something. i know that this fish is ultra sensitive, so is will that much of a temperature difference stress the powder blue tang to much or is it not really a big deal lol or am i just a freak who is too paranoid! Also if anyone has this fish i would like too know tips on keeping this fish better. thanks.

Yo need a better heater.I love my won analog titanium heater. It fluctuates .3 Deg.Only the Analog, the Digital has problems of overheatting the tank.Hope your tank is bigger than 100 gallons or take it back.Feed it garlic additive to food and a lot of greens like seaweed leafy food and Nori.

with PBT's it is a matter of actually getting them to eat. a difference of a couple degrees will not mess them up. they will encounter bigger temp variables than that along the reef slope.

i agree with Geoff, a temp swing of a degree or 2 or 3 wont hurt the PBT. and with Loverotties, who said to, feed it LOTS of greens with a garlic additive.

I had that similar problem with my regal tang. If I change the lighting...ich. If I add a new coral...ich. If I move around a rock or two...ich. If the temperature changes 2 degrees...more ich. Take out a fish; add a fish; clean the substrate; scrub the glass...ich! This is an on and off thing. The only tangs I would ever keep from now on are from the species zebrasoma. I have a scopas that shares that tank with my regal...nothing. curious about anything and everything and responds to my presence whenever I appear.

Regals, Powder Blues, Achilles and even Naso are probably the MOST ich prone fish due to stress I've had experience with...not to mention some of the most expensive.

Garlic is still not a proven direct detractor of parasites. It mainly prompts finicky fish to eat. The more the fish eats the healthier it gets thus strengthening the immune system.
Powder Blues are not as difficult to keep as most people think. If you get a good healthy speciman that is eating, feed it a varied diet including algae and you put it in a decent size tank with lots of flow they tend do to really well.
I would not recommend putting any other large fish in this tank because once the PBT has had a chance to settle in it will become a major terror to any other fish introduced after it.

Here's a starting point. I have a 300W Won Pro in my 180g that really only goes on when it gets cold in our basement during the winter. As you can see, they aren't terribly expensive, and there are other decent brands besides the Won Pro.
