I've evidently got very expensive taste.
So I went to my LFS and was talking about tangs, they recomended a Zebrasoma type. So I got on fishbase and looked up all species of Zebrasoma. Hmmm this spotted one looks very pretty and stays comparitively small, I wonder how much one of those would cost.
OMG!!!!!
Zebrasoma gemmatum - the most expensive fish I've seen - I won't be getting one of those.

They are cool looking but nowhere near worth that much. I think I would spend that kind of money on a dive trip and video it. Sheesh that thing is expensive.

There's an acanthurus species that looks much like that... and that I'd much prefer. Still, a cool fish!

Haha! It was just so surprising, I mean $3000 for a TANG? I thought it was a typo, and had to look at another place to be sure. I wonder why they are so expensive.

Difficulty in finding them in the wild (rarity).
Difficulty in collection, shipping, maintaining.
Demand versus supply will also drive the price up. If you only have 1 and 100 people want it, the price can go up a lot.

Yeah, I noticed that... I understand the rarity, shipping and everything... I have seen candy basslets that come from extremely deep water, and the divers have to use like 4 different types of air tanks just to dive down to get them, and its VERY dangerous. These fish, I understand why they are like $100-200, and if you want one, you are paying a person to risk their life to get you one. $3000? I guess its kinda like a really expensive car, just having one makes you special. I was never into that kind of thing. I'm going to get a purple tang.

Reason: the candy basslet thing was in a recent TFH mag, very interesting.

Traci, I will buy you one when I hit the lottery if you are still interested in it.
Now, the only trick is that you have to get me to start buying tickets for it.
