Question

Is this a bad idea?

Would It be a remarkably bad idea to ask what kind of tang, if any, I could keep in a 55g reef?

I know that any tang will eventually outgrow a 55g tank. (except maybe a Kole) No questions there. Im just wondering if i should even attempt this.

I was leaning toward a Kole Tang, but have considered scopas, yellow, and maybe a sailfin.

Does anyone have any advice, critisicm, help, etc.?

I will probably get arrested by the Tang Police, but I would venture to say that any smaller tang could live in a 55. I have a 2.5" Sailfin in my 55, but I will also be upgrading the tank in about 6 months. I would say the best answer would depend on the actual size and type of tang that you will purchase, and a good estimate of when you will upgrade to a larger tank.

I probably wont be upgrading for at least a year maybe longer. The tank was a gift and I feel somewhat bad about trading it for an upgrade so my goal is to keep the 55g up and running and just get a larger tank later on or possibly set up a larger tank then move all the inhabitants to that

You could also look at the Tomini tang, very similar to the kole in size and temperment. I actually kept a naso tang in a 55 gl for over 7 yrs and it never grew over about 5 in and it seemed happy, but i wouldn't do it again knowing what i do now.

If you found a smaller tang it would be fine for a year in your 55, or until you upgrade. Sailfins look really cool, personal fav.

Sailfins get as large as nasos, so I wouldnt recommend them. Honestly, it's better to buy fish for the tank you have instead of the tank you want, but I understand the draw. I wouldnt recommend getting a tang for the 55, but if you must stick with the Ctenochaetus genus.
