How do you catch em?
Hello all and greetings from Guam!!! I just moved here from the states (US Navy) and am starting my reef tank. I have it all set up, but I've been out diving/snorkeling twice and have come back with a little orange starfish that my son thinks is from Spongebob! Our reefs have every fish imaginable, and they're all fast as hell. I'm going to pick up a bigger net, but other than that, any suggestions??
Oh, btw, it's legal here to catch fish off the reef so the local fish stores don't really stock saltwater fish.
thanks in advance,
Justin
Your never gonna catch me!

Welcome to TRT!!!
very open aquascaping helps a lot. you can also get small fish traps, but they are marginally usefull depending on the intelligence of the fish. sometimes at night you can sneek on them while they are sleeping.

Can't you go down with bait. Feed them and slowly net them.

Thanks for the info. I've heard locally the evening is the best time because they're pretty easy to catch while sleeping. I'll keep you guys updated and send some pics once I do.

Catching
Build a "Slurp" Gun out of acrylic. It is basically a larger acrylic syringe. I've seen them made only once. It was used on smaller fishes like gobies and wrasses. It was a 24" rectangular gun that was 4" wide and had a 2" circular intake. The plunger had a handle on it. It was a simple build project.

Welcome to TRT - - listen to me, I'm a greenhorn myself - - my brother-in-law is from Guam, says to rig a small crab net with even smaller bait, catch them at dusk......

Caught a Naso Tang in a tide pool last week. It's a juvenile and doesn't come out much but I'll try to get a pic. So far I have the Tang, a little pinkish grey guy with big eyes, a brittle star, 3 regular star fish, a sea urchin and a sea cucumber. I'll post pics when I can get the tang to come out.
Thanx for the input, I'll keep you guys posted.

So do you just bucket the water from the ocean?

Yeah, I get the water from the ocean and about twice a week I go snorkeling and get some algae covered rocks for my tang to munch on. On the weekends I get some fresh water and change out about 5 gallons or so. I have a 55 gallon tank and thought I would have to change out more often, however the tank is doing really well right now, so I'm not going to mess with it.
