Hi I have a 250 gallon fishtank. Can I have a clown tang?


I have 2 yellow tangs, 1 naso tang, 1 purple tang, 3 sebae clowngfish, 1 foxface, 5 chromis, many corals.

I hae 2 questions about clown tang


1) can i have a clown tang in a 250 gallon fishtank?
2) Why are clown tangs said to be for experts?

Depends on what else is in your tank. They are very aggressive toward other tangs and other fish similar in body shape, need very clean water and do not acclimate well to changing parameters, which can cause stress. Ultimately they are not forgiving to newer systems and need that expert touch that can provide the habitat and feeding requirements that they need

I agree with what Hop says... you may have adequate space for such a fish, but other inhabitants and filtration is equally as important. The other large tang species in your tank may lower the chances of successfully housing a clown tang, and we'd need to know more about your tank parameters/husbandry to really give good advice.

The problem begins before you even get one in your tank. They don't transport well and many of them start going downhill shortly after collection or shipping. Getting a good specimen to start with is a hard enough.
