Fish Prices on the Rise?
I am just wanting to check and see if it is just me or if it is happening everywhere else as well.
The fish prices are really starting to climb around here now. I know that they must be paying more for shipping as well and have to try to make up for it. I want to get a Red Sea Purple Tang and the LFS I am going to for a reef club meeting tonight just got some in. They are on the small side, just the way I like to get them, about 2 1/2 inches but are now priced at $125. We are getting a discount tonight but I am not sure that will bring the price down low enough that my wife (finance manager) will let me buy one.
Are you all experiencing the same thing in your areas?

I have noticed small increases in some. I know one LFS drives a pretty long way to pick up livestock and does so once a week. I don't know what hes seeing on his side of the equation. Its seeping into dry goods to. Everything is going to be affected I would imagine. We're well over $4.00 a gallon in this area. Never really thought Id need a loan approval to fill up a 12 gallon tank... ( gas or salt water)

Yes, I see the prices rising here. Gas prices cause shipping to go up, that makes the price go up

I guess I will see how bad it really is when I get to the meeting tonight to see the prices on everything else. That fish is the only thing I asked him about while we were on the phone.

The docks here, last summer, were 5.50 a gallon and the gas stations were at 3.00 dollars. I have not checked this year but I would guess it to be somewhere around 7.00 at the dock. Gas stations are right at 4.00 for reg right now in Jax.

I might be able to get you a great deal on a purple tang... One of my customers is breaking down his tank and has a really nice purple tang - its going to need a home. Of course that is in Greenville. I'm going to try to buy his LR, I'll learn more monday hopefully.

With the shipping cost of importing fish and corals which is causing fish prices on the wholesale level to go up and then the shipping cost doubling on the retailer end it's going to get even more costly to get what we want foe our hobby.

Thanks for the offer Traci. When you find out the details please let me know, even though with all of the gas I burned up this weekend it probably won't end up being worth the drive. At the meeting tonight I actually used the coupons he puts out each week and picked up a Powder Blue Tang for $69.99 and a Yellow Tang for $24.99. These 2 fish together still came out cheaper than the Purple Tang even with 30% off.
Yes, it is definitely going to keep going higher as the fuel costs continue to rise. I may need to lay low for a while and let the stuff that I have start growing out some and not add anything new. I wonder if I can manage to do that, I highly doubt it but it is worth a thought.

Yeah, gas prices really are getting out of hand, I'm paying $200 a month in gas! and I've got a reasonably good MPG for my honda CRV. I'm seriously thinking of getting a hybrid.
I'll probably find out tommorrow about the tang. If I take the rock, he may also want me to take the rest of the livestock. I'll send you a PM.
