Fish ID

Does anyone know what kind of fish this is? Is it reef safe?

yes, that is Genicanthus lamarck. from the looks of it it looks like a female. they are reef safe. Genicanthus spp. are all reef safe. they are actually the only angelfish that i would consider reef safe.

the lamarch angel is one fo the bigger species, generally around 9". there are several more colorfull varieties common to the aquarium trade. the G. melanospilos is prolly the most popular. it is also quite a bit smaller.

Gary- i plan on it!! i just can not decide which one. i am thinking of a pair. that way i will hopefully keep the male colouring for one. i have read that they have been know to switch back and forth between male and female, with the female being the prefered form.

that is a beautifull fish you have there!!

thanks , i would have loved to get a pair as the l.f.s. had both sexes . but it was more than double for the male - $170 for him and $80 for her ! so i wasn'nt quite ready to make that commitment ! one thing though when looking to purchase one , make sure it is out and swimming , they shuold not be an overly shy fish , and never use a net on them , they have very fine scales which easily get caught .

There are many very attractive fish in this family of angels and they are generally reef safe. The Red Sea Zebra Angels like the one GWACO has pictured above are just readily becoming available. If you do not want to spend the money for a male you can always get another female and one should change sex over time. I have seen cases where the female changes in a matter of a few weeks once it was paired up with another female.
Here is my Watanabei male who I have had for over two years.

I originally had a small harem of the male in the photo and two other females but the girls didn't make the move when I transfered everything over to my new tank.

Other keys in acquiring one of these fish is to make sure that the fish are swimming normally when they are at the LFS. They tend to get collected from deeper waters so they frequently suffer from swim bladder damage and typically do not recover so if the fish is having a hard time swimming then they is more than likely swim bladder damage. They also should be slowly accimilated to the bright lights of our reef tanks so I recommend that you shorter your photo period for a few days and then gradually return in back to normal.
