Clown Fish Morning Behaviour
HI there
I am new to this so bare with me if I forget to include anything.
My husband woke me this morning to look at our recently new clown fish. We purchased 3 common clowns on Thurday and so far things seem to be well... well that was until this morning.
One of the clowns were lying on his side quite motionless and there was one of the other clowns lying and flapping on top on it.. trying to get it motivated. It lay there for around an hour and then when i wentout the room i came back in to find it swimming round the tank quite happy.
I fed them and they all seem to eat ok, and since then has been ok. Is this just the clown waking up slowly or is there a reason for this?
Any help will be much appriciated
Thanks again
Mandie

Hmm, kind of odd behavior indeed. First, I'll point out that once the fish reach sexual maturity, 3 of a kind will quickly turn into to a pair and one dead fish. That may be what you're starting to see right now, but I'd be surprised. Can you tell us more about the tank? How old is it, what other fish are in the tank, what size is it, anything you can think of.
Welcome to TRT!

thank you for your reply.. the tank is a 180 litre tank and is 8 weeks old... We started by getting the live rock built up , then we introduced hermit crabs and cleaner shrimps and turbo snails. After a few weeks of having water tested by the shop where we bought eveything from we were told we could start to add some fish... We researched everyday and asked lots of questions, and were advised to add a bi colour blennie... then after a week we introduced 3 green chromis.... Unfortuatley one of the chromis was damaged and the shop gave us that one for free but he told us he may not last.... He did for a few days but later died....
we then added our 3 clowns and so far the tank seems a happy happy place... . . . apart from this mornings show....
Ihope this is more information for you to help us...
thanks again
Mandie

What type of clowns are they? I have a pair of True Perculas that do that often.

In a 180L setup (~50 gallons I suppose), you don't have enough space for 2 pair of clowns to tolerate each other. They can be rather temperamental and aggressive with other damselfish (which includes all the clown species). Better to remove one of the clowns, to be honest.

Clownfish can do some odd things. It very well could be normal behavior.

sounds like that clown drew the short straw and had to be the anemone!
In all seriousness its hard to define what is "odd" behavior in a clown... they do some wierd stuff

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

 I would take him out.
On the other hand, I've got a clarkii at work that acts like it is hosting an invisible anemone, laying on its side in the corner while no one is around and "shimmying" in when it goes down. He's been like that for a couple months. I had to put a leather coral in that corner so it wouldn't look as odd. Still no one wants him. But he is eating and otherwise doing great.
