Busy Gobies

I have a long time established system and noticed my Substrate had lost its brilliant white appearance in some of the more open areas. I thought I would try some Sand Sifting Gobies to help things out.

Man, these guys are busy at work all day long. They have help sift my Substrate and after 2 weeks it almost looks like it did when I first setup the tank. The problem is the water clarity has been the pits.

I have a 100+ gallon system with lots of filtration, a protein skimmer, multiple powers heads, and a sump with 780 gal/hr return. I’ve never had a water clarity problem before these guys even if I sifted or moved rock around.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Will the water clarity improve over time after most of the top Substrate has been sifted?

Welcome to TRT! I'd say yes without seeing your setup.

I have the same problem in my 95. My sand sifting goby keeps everything stirred up... My sand sure is white though....my roocks are covered though.

Water clarity

I had the same problem with a brown barred goby, however he was a little more prolific in his sifting and scattering than my sand sifting goby in another tank...he scatters sand every where . I started using filter socks and the haze and even some of the stray micro bubbles have gone away .I made about( or should I say my wife made about) 5 socks so I change them every day or so and just throw them in the washing machine when I am down to the last one. Works for me Wade
