Clowns usually develop black spots when they have been hosting in a coral such as xenia, GSP, zoos, etc. Had it been hosting in anything at all? This is usually harmless and will actually go away if they stop hosting in the suspect coral.

I'm not sure about a feather duster causing spots. Is it possible he was having some other coral contact?

Glad you like the pirate clowns.

Chances are he died of something else. The black spots are harmless to them. I was freaked out by the spots mine had when they appeared. There are countless threads about it.

I am curious, was he in the same tank as the corals you lost? Was there an ammonia spike in the tank? That could have done it and then dissipated before you had the chance to test for it.

Between all of us, we'll get you back on track.

My tank may have actually taken a good turn last night. The one anemone with the first pair of clowns moved all hte way to the right side of the tank. So now I have a pair on each side(extreme sides) of the tank.
